Research by managerial studies professors Jenny Hoobler and Sandy Wayne, along with graduate student Grace Lemmon, was published in the Academy of Management Journal. Their study was recently highlighted in a Reuters News report that ran on ABC News.com as well as being featured in a U.S. News and World Report article.

The next MBA ENGAGE Event will take place at 6 p.m. on January 27, 2010 at the Innovation Center. The topic is healthcare with guest speaker Dr. Paul Rockey of the American Medical Association (AMA). 

Dr. Rockey directs the Division of Graduate Medical Education at the AMA.  He provides staff leadership and liaison in setting accreditation standards and supervises the collection, analysis and dissemination of information about the more than 8,000 residency programs in the US.  He is board certified in internal medicine and serves nationally on the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine.

The Puzzle of Index Option Returns

George M. Constantinides, Leo Melamed Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, will present “The Puzzle of Index Option Returns” as part of Quantitative Finance on Fridays, a seminar series bridging the academic and professional finance communities cosponsored by the International Center for Futures and Derivatives and the University of Chicago. The series will offer discussions of important topics concerning “Where Theory Meets Practice”. 

The seminar will take place in the Executive Conference Center of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which is located at 20 South Wacker Drive on Friday, November 20, 2009. It will begin at 4 p.m. with check-in at 3:30 p.m.

Concept2Venture Business Plan Competition

Students compete for awards exceeding $70,000 for their business ideas!!
 
The 5th Annual Concept2Venture Business Plan Competition will take place on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in the Illinois Room of Student Center East.

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate student teams from any of UIC's 15 colleges, including teams made up of students from multiple colleges. Support fellow classmates as they battle it out for the grand prize. The public and community are encouraged to attend free of charge. Teams will be evaluated based on written business plans and a 15-minute oral presentation. A distinguished panel of experts including entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, investors, and service providers will judge the entries and provide valuable feedback. This competition is hosted by UIC's College of Business Administration and the Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies.

British Non-profit Awards Grant

Hsiu-Lang Chen, associate professor of finance, was recently awarded a grant of £10,000 from INQUIRE-UK, a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering research and understanding in the field of quantitative investment methodologies for his single-author research proposal “Gradual Diffusion of Upstream and Downstream Earnings News­ Implications for Stock Prices.”

John Binder, associate professor of finance, was quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times article about the Great Depression and the current recession.

Thomas P. Hustad Best Paper Award Goes To.....

Al Page, professor and head of managerial studies, along with his former PhD student, Gary Schirr, who is now an assistant professor at Radford University, won the Thomas P. Hustad Best Paper Award for the Outstanding Professional Contribution in the Journal of Product Innovation Management in 2008. The award for their article titled “Growth and Development of a Body of Knowledge: 16 Years of New Product Development Research 1989-2004.”, was announced Saturday night at the Product Development & Management Association’s Annual Research Conference at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, CA.

Liautaud Professor Elected

Tom Murtha, professor of management, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Industry Studies Association. The ISA is a multidisciplinary academic association established with an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation development grant to provide a research forum and promote faculty career development in industry-based theoretical and empirical studies.
